EuroJGA & AFJJ Workshops in October

Passing on the Art of Japanese Gardens

We are excited to announce that the first EuroJGA workshop will take place in Europe from October 17 to 25, 2024. This unique event will span six days and take place across three stunning Japanese-inspired gardens in two countries: the Hasselt Japanese Garden in Belgium, Erik Bordja’s Zen Garden in France, and Maulévrier Oriental Park in France.

The main goal of this workshop is to transfer the knowledge and skills of Japanese master gardeners to local professional landscape gardeners. This year, two renowned master gardeners, Takumi YONEYAMA and Makoto TAKAHASHI, from the Japanese Garden Association (link, Facebook link), will lead the sessions.

This workshop is proudly supported by a grant from the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism as part of their “Restoration of Japanese Gardens Abroad” project.

Two special guests from Japan will also attend the workshop. Ms. Yuka ITÖ, an officer from the “Organization for Landscape and Urban Environment”, which works on international Japanese garden projects, will be one of the attendees. This organization, affiliated with the Ministry of Construction and Transport, facilitates projects that connect Japanese masters with the international community.

Joining her will be Mr. Jiro KOGI, a former agent of the Ministry of Construction and Transport and currently representing the “EU-Japan Fest Japan Committee”. EU-Japan Fest was founded in 1993 by volunteers from the Japanese business community and ambassadors from Europe to support cultural exchanges through the Cultural Capital of Europe initiative. Mr. KOGI aims to foster cultural exchanges in Europe, specifically around the art of Japanese gardens.

Bridging Cultures and Knowledge: A Collaborative Step Towards Promoting Japanese Garden Traditions

The NAJGA 2024 International Japanese Garden Conference, “Staying on the Path,” took place from March 5th to 9th, 2024, at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden. It included hands-on training in Japanese gardening techniques and an intensive tea ceremony introduction. There were various pre- and post-event workshops with limited spots.

NAJGA invited EuroJGA to participate on the conferences, with Diane Crawford as Vice President and representative, to give further insight on the constitution of EuroJGA, its goals and the futures activities of our association.

An agreement of collaboration between the two organizations was sign as good will to continue to work together on the path of spreading the interest and education on Japanese gardens.
